A brush with death in an avalanche helped Royce McKean to see the wisdom of his Maori ancestors care and love for the land.
To reflect this reverence for the land of his great-great-grandfather, Ngati Uenuku chieftain Tiki Tere Mihi, Royce and wife Sue named TIKI Wine & Vineyards in his honour.
TIKI grows their grapes sustainably under the Maori principles of kaitiakitanga – guardianship, protection and preservation of the earth which guide all vineyard-management decisions.
The tiki is also an esteemed Maori good luck charm.
