TIKI Wines objective was to find a location within Marlborough that had the potential to produce fruit of the highest quality with a unique flavor profile. We have succeeded. The traditional growing areas of Marlborough were thoroughly researched by Dr David Jordan, New Zealand’s pre-eminent viticultural expert. The Wairau Alpine Valley was chosen as the ideal location for the Marlborough vineyards due to the higher altitude and greater diurnal variations in temperature giving greater intensity of flavor compared with the rest of Marlborough. This semi continental climate results in slower loss of grape acids during ripening and provides the resulting wines with better balance, aroma and a distinct flavor profile unique to the sub region. The three Wairau Alpine Valley vineyards — River Terrace, Te Puki Iti (The Little Hill) and Rewa are all unique sites with their own distinctive characteristics. Soils are a range of stony silt loams with the upper terraces comprising angular stones (glacial deposits) and the lower terraces rounded stones (river deposits) reflecting their geological origins. The most widespread soils have stony silt loam top soils overlying very stony silt loam sub soils.
