Svalbard  - “The Cold Edge”

20080715svalbardthecoldedgeimagezakshaw

I think if you leave NZ and travel the greatest distance possible across the globe Svalbard comes close to winning the prize of land most distant!

Svalbard, formerly the Spitsbergen, archipelago is situated in the Arctic Ocean, about midway between Norway and the North Pole. Governed by Norway it comprises all lands between latitude 74° North and latitude 81° North and between longitude 10° East and longitude 35° East.

Tomorrow I board a vessel called the Akademik Ioffe in Svalbard’s main port of Longyearbyen ready to begin my Arctic work season as a guide for Quark Expeditions.

A return to the Apu Print E-mail

Its great to be back! Print E-mail
Its great to be back! In 2003 I worked for a rafting company and lived here in Cusco for two months. At 3300m Cusco and the surrounding sacred valley of Peru is a stunning place. I managed to get out and photograph the amazing architecture of town before Justin Venable landed here on the 10th. Having endured the long haul from NZ Justin was in surprisingly good shape. We instantly caught a bus out of town headed over the Urrubamba River, past Mt Victoria a 6000m+ snow capped peak on route to Santa Teresa.

Our bus climbed over a 4000m+ saddle Print E-mail

Our bus climbed over a 4000m+ saddle with Mt Victoria looming above. Descending over the other side were hit by thick jungle mist and switchbacks stacked upon each other. The mist obscured our view over the edge... a good thing!
